Cricket All-Stars T20 2015 series will be played in the United States from Nov 7 to Nov 14 in the cities of New York, Houston & Los Angeles. 26 ex-international cricket legends will play in the Cricket All-Stars Series 2015 along with Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne.

Sachin Tendulkar will lead the team named “Sachin’s Blasters” and Shane Warne will captain the team named “Shane’s Warriors”. Cricket All-Stars Cup 2015 is a three match T20 series between Sachin’s Blasters vs Shane’s Warriors. All the T20 matches are set to be played on drop-in pitches at three baseball stadiums – Citi Field (New York), Minute Maid Park (Houston) and Dodger Stadium (Los Angeles). International Cricket Council (ICC) already approved the Cricket All-Stars League 2015 series with a condition of sharing a portion of the earnings from the three matches to go to the game’s governing body to help grow the sport in the US.

Recently, climate scientists announced that the ice sheet of western Antarctica could collapse into the sea. But at the same time, ice sheets in eastern Antarctica are actually growing. While some people might be confused by this contradiction. However, this is a perfect example of how climate change can affect areas differently.

According to NASA glaciologist Jay Zwally the total amount of ice in Antarctica is still increasing despite the warming of the earth because of increased snowfall and moisture that came from the Ice Age thousands of years ago.

Indeed, to this day, the current snowfall in Antarctica is greater than the ice that is lost by melting glaciers. In fact, ice sheets in the area might actually reabsorb some of the glacial ice that is lost in the melting process.

However, this does not mean that all is well in Antarctica. Reports show that east Antarctica had gained 112 billion tons of ice every year from 1992 to 2001. However, the growth rate dropped to 82 billion tons from 2003 and 2008. This growth rate has continued to drop ever since.

Additionally, the melting of the glaciers in the Amundsen Sea could have drastic effects on the region’s western ice cover.

Zwally explained, “If the losses of the Antarctic Peninsula and parts of West Antarctica continue to increase at the same rate they’ve been increasing for the last two decades, the losses will catch up with the long-term gain in East Antarctica in 20 or 30 years. I don’t think there will be enough snowfall increase to offset these losses.”

At one point in time, the sea cap of Antarctic ice was one a solid sheet. Now, it has been fragmented into smaller portions that are more prone to melting from warmer waters.

Think of it like putting an ice cube into a hot drink. One giant large ice cube will last longer than two smaller ice cubes. Antarctica has essentially been broken up from one giant ice cube into sections of smaller ice cubes.

If western Antarctica ice continues to melt the remainder of the ice cover could malt as well. It’s very possible that the entire ice sheet of western Antarctica could collapse into the ocean. Computer models show that global sea levels would rise more than ten feet if this were to occur.

There are not many features in Antarctica that would stop this from happening. And as more melting occurs, future melting will occur at a faster rate.

Luckily, this would take hundreds of years to take place. Still, we are on a very dangerous path that is only going to spiral more and more out of control over time.

So even though some ice in Antarctica might be getting thicker, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing melting happening faster and faster.

Walking Fish discoverd in Himalaya

Sneezing Monkey, Walking Fish among 211 new species discovered in Himalaya

he Indian Himalayan region boasts few species that were yet unknown to mankind. A team of WWF (World Wide Funds) researchers have discovered 211 new species in the region. The discovery has been made over a time period of five years while surveying at Eastern Himalayas and Northeast region. The newly discovered species includes a frog with blue eyes, a walking blue fish, and a snub-nosed monkey that sneezes when it rains.

While searching for wildlife in regions like Nepal, Bhutan, the far north of Myanmar, southern Tibet and north-eastern India, The WWF researchers found 211 new species including 133 plant species, 26 fish species, 10 new amphibians, one mammal, one bird and one reptile.

Some newly discovered species raised the eyebrows of the scientists like vibrant blue dwarf walking snakehead fish that can inhale atmospheric air can survive up to four days on land. While the snub nose monkey amazed the scientists with its upturned nose. It is first of its kind and also very unfortunate as every time in rain the monkey sneezes as water gets stuck in the nose. To avoid this problem snub-nosed monkey sit with their head tucked between their nose as it prevents water from entering in to nose.

When asked from local people about the snub-nosed monkey they said that it is very easy to find the monkey in regions of Myanmar, also it is a great site to watch in rainy days. Researchers were so mesmerized with the specie that they nicknamed it “Snubby”.

The report presented by the WWF also mentions a living gem -the bejeweled lance-headed pit viper, which could pass as a carefully crafted piece of jewelry. Researchers have also discovered a plant-eating, rodent-like mammal.

More that 550 species have been discovered in the Eastern Himalayas including Bhutan, north Myanmar, Nepal, southern Tibet and north-eastern Indian states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, and North Bengal in last 15 years. This depicts India’s rich flora and fauna and rich biodiversity
Apart from it, about 12 percent of the world’s endangered species live in India. “With discovery, comes the important responsibility to continue protecting and caring for these precious gift that this world has been blessed with,” said Dechen Dorji, Country Representative, WWF Bhutan.

Doctors advised for Alcohol reduce to Kids - Research says

The Advice College Kids Aren't Getting About Drinking

Government researchers say “deplorably” few college students are warned by doctors about the danger from alcohol and drugs or encouraged to reduce drinking or substance use.

Their survey suggests that most doctors ask college students and other young adults about alcohol or drug use at regularly scheduled visits. But doctors don’t go much beyond that initial question less than half of the time.

The study by National Institutes of Health researchers was published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics. Some highlights about the findings:

THE SURVEY

About 2,100 college students and other young adults across the country were asked in 2012 and 2013 if they’d seen a doctor in the previous year and had been asked and counseled about their drinking, smoking and drug use. Participants had taken part in an earlier government health survey while in high school. In the new survey, most attended college but about one-third were not students.

DOCTORS & COUNSELING

Most of those surveyed had a recent doctor visit where they were asked about smoking, drinking and substance abuse. Fewer than half the college students said they’d been counseled about risks of those habits. Only one-third of college students who told researchers they’d been drunk at least six times in the previous month said doctors had advised them to cut down or stop. That advice was slightly less common for college students who were frequent smokers or drug users.

Non-students were slightly more likely to get that kind of counseling.

Lead researcher Ralph Hingson of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism said it’s possible participants didn’t tell doctors the truth about their drinking habits. Even so, physicians’ lack of advice may send a message that heavy drinking is OK, Hingson said.

DRINKING STATS

Overall, 40 percent of participants told researchers they’d consumed five or more drinks on at least one occasion and 10 percent had been drunk at least six times in the past month.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcohol is linked with nearly 2,000 deaths each year among college students, and many more assaults and date rapes.

WHY NO COUNSELING?

Dr. Tanveer Mir, chair of the American College of Physicians’ Board of Regents, said doctors may assume college students already know about the risks and consequences. Also, physician training often doesn’t emphasize that those problems are preventable and treatable, and physicians may feel that there isn’t enough time in an office visit to address the issue, Mir said. She was not involved in the study.

The researchers said efforts are needed to remove those barriers because studies have shown that screening and brief counseling can reduce alcohol misuse.

A young Sri Lankan science student has reportedly been invited by the British Prime Minister David Cameron to attend a conference organised by the world’s top universities.

Rakitha Dilshan Malewana will also make history by becoming the first to represent Sri Lanka at the Conference of the World Association of Young Scientists’ (WAYS).

While Rakitha may not be a familiar name, the 20-year-old has definitely put the tiny Island in the Indian Ocean on the map through his achievement in medical research.

The Colombo student recently won a gold medal at the International Science Project Olympiad (ISPRO) 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia, for presenting a drug that can cure HIV/AIDS.

A young Sri Lankan science student has reportedly been invited by the British Prime Minster David Cameron to attend a conference organised by the world’s top universities.

This marks the first time a gold medal has been won by a South Asian country in ISPRO, triumphing over 180 young scientists from 31 participating countries.

Rakitha said: “I began researching on HIV/AIDS because a solution has not been found for this disease anywhere in the world, as yet.

“Therefore, what I did was an experiment into the first phase of the virus. It was successful. More research has to be carried out in order to confirm this.”

He explained how he utilised nanotechnology to ‘stop protein and holding cells connected to the virus from joining together’, so as to terminate the activity AIDS virus cells at its early stages.

But the young scientist is well aware none of this would have been possible without the incredible support of his college.

Rakitha said: “Although I had to encounter obstacles at first, now university teachers and Dr. Anil Samaranayake of the Medical Research Institute provide me with special assistance.

“Lecturer at the Chemistry Department of Science Faculty of the University of Colombo, Rohini deSilva, helped me immensely. As we faced those challenges successfully, today we are able to launch such a project.”

Prior to his stunning discovery of a cure for HIV/AIDS, Rakitha was awarded at the ISPRO for his research findings on the use green tea extracts treating leukemia in 2014.

This study, believed to be a revolutionary step towards battling leukemia, was also presented at the Young Scientists’ New Research Forum in Los Angeles.

Despite his remarkable achievement, Rakitha has expressed concerns for the lack of opportunities for other students to conduct research in South Asian countries.

He told a local news hub: “Students from developed nations are given scholarships. I really want to create such an atmosphere in Sri Lanka as well.

“It would be so valuable that if we could borrow better things from developed nations into our country without losing our identity.”

At the moment, Rakitha is taking part at the International Environment and Sustainability Olympiad (INESPO) 2015, which is being held at Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The young scientist will certainly be a good role model for many youngsters in South Asia with ambition in medical research, breaking the common traditions of becoming doctors or engineer.
